Overview

Submitting quarterly updates is a key requirement of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT). AccountsDesk automatically prepares the submission using the income and expense records you have entered throughout the quarter and allows you to submit them directly to HMRC.

Before You Start

Before submitting a quarterly update, ensure you have:

  • Entered all property income transactions for the reporting period
  • Entered all property expense transactions for the reporting period
  • Authorised AccountsDesk to communicate with HMRC
  • Confirmed the records are complete and accurate

Step 1: Add Property Income Records

Add all digital records relating to your property income for the quarter you are reporting.

Examples include:

  • Rental income
  • Service charges received
  • Other property-related income

Step 2: Add Property Expense Records

Add all digital records relating to your property expenses.

Examples include:

  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Insurance
  • Agent fees
  • Utilities
  • Other allowable expenses

Step 3: Open Obligations

Navigate to:

MTD Income Tax → Obligations

The Obligations page displays all open and previously submitted quarterly obligations received from HMRC.

Step 4: Select Your Property Business

Choose the property business for which you wish to submit an update:

  • UK Property
  • Foreign Property

AccountsDesk will then display the obligations available for the selected business.

Step 5: Select the Quarterly Obligation

From the Open Obligations list, locate the quarter you wish to submit.

Click Submit.

Step 6: Review the Submission Data

A summary window will be displayed containing the figures that will be submitted to HMRC.

Review the information carefully and confirm that it matches the income and expense records entered in AccountsDesk.

If any values are incorrect, return to your records, make the necessary changes and reopen the submission screen.

Step 7: Submit the Quarterly Update

Click Save to submit the quarterly obligation.

AccountsDesk will securely transmit the quarterly update to HMRC using the Making Tax Digital service.

Step 8: Verify Submission Success

Once HMRC accepts the submission, a confirmation message will be displayed.

This confirms that your quarterly obligation has been successfully received by HMRC.
