How to connect to HMRC / In 5 simple steps

Step - 1

To view and send data digitally to HMRC, you will have to first connect your account with HMRC MTD API. You will find the link "HMRC Connection" under "Setup" in the left navigation area as shown below.


Step - 2

Clicking on the "HMRC Connection" link will show you the below screen. This screen lists out the permissions that you will need to grant AccountsDesk to communicate digitally with HMRC.


Step - 3

Click on the "Connect to HMRC" button to start the process of connecting your account to HMRC MTD API.

After you click the button, you will be redirected to HMRC website. HMRC website will show you the below page.


Businesses using the MTD software would need to enter their gateway account and password at the HMRC website. If you are an agent and using the MTD software to connect your clients, you would need to enter the agent services account user ID and password.

Step - 4

Click on the "Continue" button to go to the HMRC login page as shown below to enter the credentials.


After you sign in to HMRC website, HMRC website lists you the permissions that it is going to grant AccountsDesk and also the steps for you to revoke those permissions in the future as shown below.

If you do not revoke the permissions, the permissions are valid up to 18 months.

Step - 5

Grant authority to AccountsDesk for MTD VAT

Click on the "Grant authority" to give AccountsDesk permissions to read and send VAT data digitally to HRMC as part of the making tax digital initiative.

After you click the button you will be redirected back to AccountsDesk website. Now click on the VAT dashboard menu item in the left side menu to go to the VAT dashboard, where you can view your VAT obligations, VAT payments, VAT liabilities as well as view and submit VAT returns.

Grant authority to AccountsDesk for MTD ITSA

Click Give permission to authorise AccountsDesk to read and submit your ITSA (Income Tax Self Assessment) data digitally to HMRC as part of the Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative.

Once permission is granted, you will be redirected back to the AccountsDesk website. Open the Businesses dashboard from the left-hand menu to access your self-assessment businesses, where you can manage digital record keeping, view your ITSA obligations, check your ITSA liabilities, and prepare or submit your ITSA returns.
